Summerlicious is taking the city of Toronto by storm and we just had to know which restaurant was the best. We sent our marketing intern to try out this option on the Summerlicious roster this year – read all about her experience below!
Located at the corner of Convenience and Comfort
“I had already made my reservation for other restaurants participating in Summerlicious but ended up stumbling onto My Kitchen as I was walking around my neighbourhood.
Believe it or not, I had once loved to eat at My Kitchen but as my schedule got busier, My Kitchen slowly stopped becoming my regular go-to spot.
When I first stepped into My Kitchen, I felt a sudden sense of comfort – it truly has a way of making you feel right at home. Upon being seated, I ordered the Chef’s Plate special of Sirloin Steak with Crispy Rosti Potatoes off the menu.
Now, here comes the fun part: My Kitchen actually allows you to cook the meal yourself!
Well, parts of it anyway – most of the work is done for you, you just have to chop everything up and cook it together.
Now, I’m a picky eater – yes, unfortunately I’m one of those people with food allergies. Ordering can be a nightmare with the substitutions and extra costs for different items but being able to cook your own dish made all the difference. I’m not a fan of onion or chives so I was able to leave those out of the dish. Normally in other restaurants, you would have to beg and plead for them to even consider substituting or omitting ingredients but this wasn’t an issue in My Kitchen!
The food was piping hot and fresh since I had just cooked and prepped with them prior to eating. This was a refreshing change from some of the cold pasta dishes or clearly-reheated dishes that I had been served before for Summerlicious.
I also loved that you got to find out what went into your food. Each dish came with a full list of ingredients so you could see exactly what went into each dish – nothing less and nothing more!
And voila, above is my finished dish! When I finally took the first bite of my steak, I was in heaven. Steak heaven, anyways. I could taste my hard work and effort that was put into the dish and let me tell you – that made it all the more satisfying and delicious.
When we were filled to the brim and so full we couldn’t even speak, I realized that – holy cow – there were still leftovers which I happily brought to work the next day.
I absolutely loved my experience and will be heading back to My Kitchen soon. It’s a great alternative to your typical dinner plans. I think of it as an oasis in a desert of rushed (and often snooty) service, tiny portions, and substandard preparation.
