Ingredient of the Month: Apples
Apples are some of the most popular and delicious fruits on the planet and we can see why! There is nothing like biting into a bright, red, crisp apple to quench your thirst and satisfy your sweet tooth, all while boosting your health in a major way.
Why do we love apples so much? Well first of all, they can be grown locally in Ontario and we love to know that the food we consume is locally grown and supported. Secondly, we love the versatility of an apple! Eat it raw? Sure! Cooked? Baked? Made into a sauce? Compote? Yes! In fact, during the month of September, we’re going to be featuring an apple recipe each week so you can really learn how to cook unique recipes with this fall favourite fruit.
Did You Know?
- Apples are the fruit of Ontario. Close to 20 different varieties of apples are grown on 16,000 acres in Ontario!
- Apples are a nutrition powerhouse! Not only are they loaded with Vitamin C and fiber but apples are known to have the highest concentration of antioxidants for fruits.
- Store apples in the fridge. Apples ripen six to ten times faster at room temperature than if they are refrigerated.
