Working on the customer service desk, I get this question a lot, or similar variations, is Chefs Plate for me, will my Family like this? What is so great about Chefs Plate and why should I sign up?
I, of course, have a standard set of answers for this and if you spoke to me on the phone you would hear some variation of my reasonings and why I think that you should give us a go but of course, those talks are more succinct, shorter; if this were the film industry they would call it a log line. So I thought that I would give you my own personal testimonial using this platform so you can decide for yourself if our company is right for you.
Short answer? Yes. Yes it is.
I am not just talking about the flexibility of the subscription, or the wonderful, friendly customer service team you may speak to if something does go wrong, but I am talking of the service itself. For anyone who loves to cook or for any person who is new to cooking, Chefs Plate will have something for you. Whether you have a kitchen filled with every gadget under the sun (but do you really need that ice maker connected to WiFi?!) or just the bare basics, Chefs Plate caters to all of that.
A little background about myself, I have lived in Toronto for a little over a year now – in fact I have only lived in Canada for that long, I moved here with nothing but a dream (a little cheesy – ok a dream and the amount of money, insurance and paperwork that the government requires) and in terms of kitchen equipment I had nothing. When I moved into my apartment I had only but a bottle opener and a wine glass. Which may be more telling about my character than anything but, I digress.
I quickly went to the closest and cheapest place I could find to kit my kitchen out on a budget (thank you unnamed Dollar Store!) and came back with: an already blunt kitchen knife, a spatula, a wooden spoon and an assortment of pans, baking trays (or cookie sheets if my Canada to English terminology is correct) and a measuring jug.
I am not that experienced of a cook – I learnt to cook the bare basics by watching my Mother as I grew up but can probably only make three of four dishes that actually taste like they are supposed to. That is where Chefs Plate came in. Having lived in London previously, this kind of food service is everywhere, I could get anything at my door in 30 minutes. From take out, to partly cooked food, to the basic groceries and I was looking for something like that here in Toronto. I stumbled across the Chefs Plate website and read a little about what they did (I also saw that they were hiring so you could say it was a happy accident!) and thought to myself that I will give these guys a go. I got my first box (a sausage orecchiette if I recall) something that I would never make myself but would always order when out at a favourite Italian restaurant of mine so thought, alright, I will give it a go! Everything was great, the packaging, the portions and I was able to create a wonderfully, delicious meal using the only 5 items at my disposal – which was bloody brilliant.
I don’t order Chefs Plate every week (another excellent perk about the service!) as I do want to make my old faithful dishes from time to time but my kitchen equipment has still stayed relatively minimal but I am still able to make every meal that I have purchased and unlike my kitchen, the meals are anything but basic. So for even the most inexperienced, ill-equipped new chef I would certainly say, yes, Chefs Plate is definitely for you.
