At Chefs Plate, we’re firm believers that everyone can benefit from a little bit of spice in their lives, and we want to help take you on a culinary adventure around the globe.
In the first instalment of our “Culture Night” series, we’re going to start by taking a dive into Indian Cuisine! Food plays a big role in how they spend time and relax, and dinner time is family time – so gather your loved ones together, and let’s get cooking!
Indian civilization is one of the oldest in the world, dating back around 4000 years, and during that time they have developed a rich history of culture and tradition. Food and family are at the at the centre of these traditions, from when dinner is scheduled to the way dishes are prepared and served – no one should eat alone!
Most dishes are served family-style, with big bowls of food in the middle of the table, and everyone helps themselves to the portions that they want. Make sure you wash your hands first though, because utensils are a no-go! Food is served in bite-sized pieces that you can either use your fingers to pick up or tear a piece of bread such as roti or naan, and use it to scoop up the fragrant curries, dips and sauces. Indian food has as an heavy emphasis on herbs as spices, and eating each bite with a piece of roti can really help cool down your mouth!
Now that we know how to eat the food, the next question is where? At the dining room table? Guess again! Grab a cushion, because we’ll be sitting on the floor! Although it’s increasingly uncommon, especially in North America, this style of eating is still practiced in many parts of rural India, and is a great experience to try with your family as well.
Indian cuisine is so unique because it combines elements and flavours from so many of its surrounding areas. Even across the country, the food varies greatly from region to region. One amazing meal that borrows elements from all corners of the country is biryani – a rice dish containing a variety of fragrant spices, meats, and vegetables.
The only drawback of this dish is that it’s generally labour-intensive to make as each of the elements takes an extremely long time to prepare. But not to worry, at Chefs Plate, we’ve enlisted the help of celebrity chef Vikram Vij to help us develop a fast and equally delicious Chicken Biryani recipe, so you can enjoy this age-old Indian delicacy without the painstaking process!
This is the perfect example of a family-style dish that will surely bring everyone together, and fantastic option to headline your own Culture Night. Get ready for a taste of India with this recipe, and make it an experience the whole family will enjoy!
