Chef’s Plate vs. Grocery Store Prices

We hear the same question from our customers time and time again – how much do you ACTUALLY save with Chefs Plate? Since we were curious to see the price difference ourselves, we sent one of our customers to their local grocery store to buy the ingredients for our Sirloin Steak with Drunken Potatoes. You’ll be shocked to discover how much they actually saved with Chefs Plate!

The result? The grocery bill was $48.12.Chefs Plate Sirloin with Drunken Potatoes Holy moly! Turns out shopping at the grocery store was 120% more expensive ($26.22 more) than our two person portion.

For our experiment, we asked our customer to follow the exact same recipe and produce dinners in the exact same portions to try and beat our price of $10.95 per plate.

We didn’t take this scientific experiment lightly. To follow our recipe exactly, we had the customer purchase every ingredient including the garlic, brown sugar and butter. But, even if we assumed that garlic, brown sugar and butter are readily available at home, the total still came to a whopping $35.15 for two people.

In addition to higher costs, the customer found the entire process frustrating. Right off the bat, they could not find the exact ingredients Chefs Plate offers –  the 9oz steak, purple asparagus and roma tomatoes? Nowhere to be found. Even the regular tomatoes and green asparagus weren’t in stock which lead us to wonder: How many times have you gone to follow a recipe only to have the same thing happen?

Factoring in lineups, sitting in traffic and the actual prep work for the meal, the customer spent nearly 2 hours extra than the  Chef’s Plate experience. In addition, the customer was so accustomed to getting perfectly portioned ingredients and sauces so it didn’t sit well when they had to invest in a full bag of garlic (an individual head was $3.99, so it made more sense to buy the bag) and a full jar of Dijon mustard. Let’s be real though, this is hardly an investment considering you will only use these items a few times.

In the end, we were told that the meal still tasted amazing. Was it worth the extra time and money spent? I guess that would depend how much you value your time, and sanity.  It is quite clear to us that Chefs Plate is a winner on all fronts: It saves you time, money and food!

We do all the legwork and prep work so you can get to the stuff that really matters – cooking and eating!
