Have you heard? National Grilled Cheese Day is finally here! This is one holiday that we can’t help but celebrate. The comfiest of comfort foods can be classically simple, and bring back the fondest of childhood memories, or upgraded with a gourmet twist. We’re going to share some mouthwatering versions of the conventional recipe, and we’re sure you’re going to be marking this date down on your calendar as an occasion you’ll never ignore!
First we’re going to show you the best way to start off your day – grilled cheese for breakfast!
Grilled Bacon & Cheese Sandwich on a Waffle
A regular grilled cheese is great for any meal – and even as a snack, but why not take it up a notch in this extra special breakfast version? All you have to do is thaw out some frozen breakfast waffles, and use them as a replacement for the bread, then add a few slices of crispy bacon! To get the perfect cheese ratio, layer one slice of cheese on top of a waffle, pile on the bacon, add a second slice of cheese on top of that, and top it off with the other waffle. Fry it up in a buttered non-stick pan for 3-5 minutes per side, and serve it with maple syrup for a mind-blowing combination of sweet and savoury flavours!
Garlic Ham & Cheese
Who doesn’t love garlic bread? Mince one clove of garlic, and mix it into 3-4 Tbsp of softened butter, and spread the mixture onto the outside of the bread. Add a slice of cheese and one of two slices of ham – and for an extra crispy, cheesy finish, sprinkle parmesan cheese on the buttered side of the bread before frying!
Pizza Grilled Cheese
If you thought grilled cheese couldn’t get more perfect – think again! Turning anything into a pizza version of itself is a recipe for success, and grilled cheese is no exception. First, butter the outside of two slices of bread (or even better – garlic butter sprinkled with parmesan!). Spread 1 Tbsp. of pizza sauce on the inside of one slice of bread, add ¾ cup of mozzarella cheese, and 8 slices of pepperoni. Sprinkle a bit more parmesan cheese on top, add 1 Tbsp. of pizza sauce to the other side of the bread, assemble the sandwich and fry it up!
Jalapeño Popper Grilled Cheese
Ready to kick it up a notch and add a little heat? Turning one of the best gameday snacks into a crispy, gooey, spicy grilled cheese doesn’t get any easier. Combine 4oz of cream cheese with 1 finely chopped (and seeded if you like) jalapeño pepper, and 1 tsp. of garlic powder. You can even add some extra cheddar cheese and come crispy bacon to make it extra melty. Butter the outsides of the bread, and fry in a pan until golden brown on both sides.
Brie and Apple Grilled Cheese
This last one is for when you’re feeling a little fancy, and paired with a good bottle of wine makes for a great date night in. First, combine 2 Tbsp. of butter with ½ tsp. fresh thyme, ¼ tsp. fresh rosemary, and a pinch of salt, and spread the mixture on the outside of some sourdough bread. In the middle, layer brie cheese, thin slices of apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work beautifully), and a small handful of baby arugula. Fry on medium-low until the cheese is slightly melted and the bread is golden brown, and then flip to finish cooking. A drizzle of honey to finish is the perfect complement to this delectable sandwich.
With all of these exciting new varieties, you’ll be turning Grilled Cheese Day into Grilled Cheese Week!
